Obituaries

Katherine "Kay" C. Ellison, 92 of Boone, formerly of Colo, died on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Hearthstone Memory Care Unit in Boone.  Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14 at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 5th Street in Nevada.  Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Kay was born on January 23, 1918 in Sheldahl, Iowa to Forrest and Ida (Burkey) Horner.  She was a graduate of Colo High School and AIB College.  On November 20, 1943, Kay married Thomas Vern Ellison in Colo.  She was a secretary for Iowa By-Products in Colo and retired from ISU.  After Thomas' death, she resided at the Maplewood Condominiums in Ankeny from 1988-2005.  Kay was a member of the Colo Methodist Church, UMW, Order of the Eastern Star, Priscilla Club, and numerous bridge clubs.  She was also a 4-H Leader. Her grandchildren and great grandchild were the joy of her life.

Kay is survived by 2 daughters, Pam Quinn of Bouton, IA and Jan Berkowitz of Dallas, TX; 2 grandchildren Cathy Anderson and Justin Berkowitz; and a great grandchild Thomas Anderson.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on February 4, 1987, and a brother, LaVern Horner.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 13 with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.

A memorial fund has been established in Kay's name for the Hearthstone Memory Care Unit garden area.

Chet Ryan Mortuary has been entrusted with the care of Kay and her family.
